Distillers or Reverse Osmosis Systems: How Do They Compare?
When deciding which water treatment to use for your home, you may have wanted to compare water that is distilled with water from a reverse osmosis system. These methods purify your drinking water in different ways.
A distiller heats the water and the vapors rise into a chamber where condensation turns it back into a liquid minus and solids or contaminants.
A reverse osmosis system forces water through a semi permeable membrane which only allows water molecules to pass through and blocks any impurities or contaminants larger in size.
In both systems there is usually a post carbon filter that gets rid of remaining odors or tastes. These filters will also need to be replaced on a regular basis.
In the distiller, accumulated solids and scaling will have to be cleaned off or removed. In a reverse osmosis system, contaminants and impurities prevented from passing through the membrane are force down the drain.
In general, a gallon of purified water takes longer to accumulate with a distiller than with a reverse osmosis system. A gallon of distilled water costs approximately .25 cents to produce while it costs approximately .10 cents with a reverse osmosis system including their costs for replacing filters and other maintenance expenses.
